Hey 3Dmodels community! I'm trying to create a character for a game dev project and I'm absolutely struggling with UV mapping in Maya. I've watched a few tutorials but I just can't seem to get it right. My character's UVs end up looking like a tornado hit them and when I apply textures, some parts look fine while others are stretched or have obvious seams running through important details like the face.

I understand the basic concept (I think?) that I need to "unfold" the 3D model into 2D space for texturing, but I'm really lost on how to properly plan the cuts, unfold them efficiently, and organize them so textures apply correctly.

My workflow so far is just selecting parts, hitting "Automatic Mapping" then "Unfold" and praying, but my results are inconsistent. The face and hands especially are giving me trouble. Any tips or resources that explain this in simple terms? I need a real beginner-friendly approach here!

I've been working on a game project and just finished sculpting my main character in ZBrush. Got it into Maya for rigging, but I'm at a crossroads now. I've done basic rigging from scratch before, but it takes forever and I'm on a tight deadline. The character has some challenging areas, especially around the shoulders and hips where I need good deformation.

Looking for recommendations on auto-riggers that balance speed with quality results. I've heard about Advanced Skeleton, mGear, Hive, and a few others, but I'd love to hear from folks who use these tools regularly. Which one gives the best deformation while being relatively quick to set up? Also, I'll need to export to a game engine so compatibility is important.

Would really appreciate any insights or experiences you can share!

What animation exercises would you recommend for someone with limited time (about 5-6 hours per week)? I'd like to focus on projects that teach fundamental skills but also look impressive enough to include in a beginner portfolio.

Any suggestions for character rigs I could use? Thanks!

I'm not ready to drop $6000+ on the full version, and I've read about Maya Indie being much more affordable while having the same functionality. Where can I actually find it?

The problem is I'm starting to worry about what happens when it expires. I know I won't be making enough money right after graduation to afford the full version. How should I prepare for this transition? Has anyone else navigated this situation successfully?

I know a lot of people will just say "switch to Blender" but I feel it's important for my career prospects to maintain proficiency with Maya since it's so widely used in the industry.
