Try just importing and exporting a model - you can't, because everything comes bundled with processes that can mess up your mesh. In production you need reliability. That's why I use ZBrush for sculpting and Toolbag for texturing. Boring maybe, but it works.

In fact, I've just switched to Mudbox.

Seriously. It's exactly what I need: simple tools that just work, good subdivision support, and it plays nice with Maya and Photoshop. No crazy features I'll never use, just the basics done right. For my workflow (mostly simple brushes and subdivision) it's perfect. Sometimes the old solutions are the best.

Push it to 128M though and it gets pretty rough - definitely not usable for serious work. This is on the latest version 2024.13. Can't really compare with ZBrush since I usually stay under a few million tris anyway.

Voxel sculpting gets really messy unless you crank up the resolution, and then you're just dealing with the same problems as high-res dynamesh. The whole "rooms" system is driving me crazy - need a quick adjustment? Sorry, you have to send everything to another room, make your change, then send it back. Super annoying compared to just doing what you need right in ZBrush. That said, the retopo tools are actually better than ZBrush in some ways. The auto retopo works well enough, and the manual tools give you a lot more control.

I just started testing 3DCoat and frankly I'm impressed. It feels like everything I wanted ZBrush to be. The viewport rendering actually shows you what you're getting in your game engine, unlike ZBrush where you're basically working blind half the time. Being able to switch between sculpting and texturing on the fly is amazing and the UI actually makes sense for once! The texturing brushes are also fantastic - much easier to work with in an artistic way than having to rely on procedural tools all the time. There are a few bugs here and there, but nothing major. Does anyone else use it? I think it could replace both ZBrush and my texturing applications.
