I'm searching for a budget-friendly alternative to ZBrush for high polygon sculpting. My wallet is crying at ZBrush's price tag, but I still need something that can handle detailed work. Has anyone found good software that won't break the bank? I'm specifically looking for something that can handle high-poly count for detailed character models.

Blender's sculpting tools are your best bet for free options. They've improved dramatically in recent updates and can handle pretty high poly counts if you configure your settings right. The big advantage is having everything in one package - you can sculpt, retopo, and texture without switching software.

For paid options that are still cheaper than ZBrush, check out 3D Coat. It has a perpetual license model and excellent voxel-based sculpting.

Have you tried Nomad Sculpt? It's primarily designed for tablets but can run on PC with an Android emulator. Super intuitive interface and surprisingly powerful for the price.

I've been using Blender's sculpt tools but had to optimize my settings to get decent performance. Here's what worked for me:

1. Enable backface culling
2. Disable anti-aliasing
3. Turn off outlines
4. Use the multires modifier with optimizations enabled

With these settings, I can push 40+ million polys on a modest system. It took some tweaking but now runs smoothly.

Mudbox is another paid alternative that's cheaper than ZBrush. Their subscription model is more affordable if you're just getting started.

Nomad Sculpt + Bluestacks (Android emulator) = Poor man's ZBrush 😂

Works surprisingly well though!
