Converting 3ds max to obj - what's the easiest way?

Hey guys, messed up and bought a 3D model that's in .max format without checking first 🤦‍♂️ Need it as .obj for my project but all online converters either fail or look super sketchy. Tried installing 3ds max trial but getting some weird installation errors. Any suggestions before I try hunting down the original artist? Really need this model...

Fix your Max installation first - what error are you getting? Maybe we can help
Use modelo.io - it's legit and works with most max files
Last resort - find someone with Max, but be careful about sharing purchased assets

bro ALWAYS check file formats before buying! learned this the hard way too lol. try clearing some disk space and installing max again, sometimes that helps with installation

Be careful about sharing purchased models with third parties for conversion. Could violate the license agreement. Best to either fix Max installation or contact the artist.

Thanks everyone! Managed to get Max trial working after a clean install. For anyone finding this later: just delete EVERYTHING Max-related (including registry) before trying to install again. Working on the conversion now.

For future reference: In Max, go to File > Export > choose OBJ. Make sure "Preserve max's texture coordinates" is checked if you need the UVs. Also choose the right scale unit!

@merlelon newer versions can usually open older files, but not vice versa. Latest Max trial should handle 2020 files no problem.
