Where to download free 3D character models for my indie game?

Hi everyone,

I'm developing my first indie game and I've hit a roadblock with character models. My budget is basically non-existent right now, and I can't afford to spend hundreds on professional 3D characters.

I've been looking for websites where I can download free 3D character models that are suitable for games. Ideally they would be rigged and maybe even have some basic animations, but at this point I'll take what I can get.

I've tried Google searches but most sites I find want significant money for decent models. Any recommendations for free resources? Or even very affordable options?

Thanks for any help you can offer!

Have you considered opengameart.org? They have quite a selection of free assets.

That said, I have to ask - if budget is so tight that you can't afford character models, maybe consider if a 3D game is the right approach? 2D games are generally much more accessible for solo devs or small teams on tight budgets. The asset requirements are less demanding, and you might be able to create your own sprites more easily than 3D models.

Whatever direction you choose, make sure the aesthetic is consistent. Nothing breaks immersion faster than mismatched asset styles thrown together.

👆 This. Seriously consider 2D if you're on a super tight budget.

The Unreal marketplace has tons of free characters if you're using Unreal Engine. Here's the link with the price filter set to free:
https://www.fab.com/channels/unreal-engine?categories=characters-creatures&listing_types=smart-asset&is_free=1

Also don't forget that Metahuman is free to use, which gives you realistic human characters that are fully rigged. You only pay if your game makes over $1 million in revenue.

The Unity Asset Store also has a decent free section: https://assetstore.unity.com/

Honestly though, learning to create basic low-poly characters in Blender isn't that difficult. Give yourself a weekend to follow some tutorials and you might be surprised at what you can create. Plus, then you'll have total control over the style and won't be limited to whatever free assets you can find.

There are affordable low-poly character packs out there that won't break the bank. Sometimes spending $20-50 on a good pack with multiple characters can save you weeks of work.

Check out Fab.com - they have a ton of models with different licenses. Many are available under Creative Commons, just make sure you credit the creators properly in your game.

You can also try CGTrader and Turbosquid - both have free sections, though the quality varies wildly. Sort by free and you might find some gems.

I got a fully rigged character from CGTrader for $50 once that was actually game-ready. Not free, but definitely affordable compared to custom work.

If nothing else works out and you need something quick, Mixamo has free characters and animations. The characters aren't the most stylish, but they're functional, rigged, and you can apply any of their animations.
