Hey everyone, I'm having a hard time finding good sources for real-world heightmaps for my landscape project. I've tried several options with no luck:
1. Tangrams doesn't let me zoom in enough to get detailed terrain
2. Terrain.Party only gives me a text file saying I'm "too near the poles" even when I'm downloading something at the equator
3. Tried heightmap.skydark.pl after seeing a recommendation, but got blank files
4. The National Map (apps.nationalmap.gov) has color-coded elevation maps but no B&W heightmaps, and I'm not sure how to convert them
Does anyone know where I can still get actual heightmaps without having to generate them in WorldMachine or World Creator? Thanks in advance!
Try this: https://manticorp.github.io/unrealheightmap/
It's been my go-to for a while now. Super reliable for getting real-world heightmaps that work well in UE.
+1 for manticorp's tool! Saved me countless hours.
NASA has terrain data with resolutions up to 32K if I recall correctly. Worth checking out if you need something highly detailed.
Thanks everyone for the suggestions! @Martindef I'll definitely check out that Manticorp tool first.
@HrentDelek - do you have a specific link for the NASA data? That sounds promising for high-res needs.
Don't forget to check national land survey organizations. They often have public data available. For example, Finland's national land survey has LIDAR-sampled heightmap rasters for the entire country at 2-meter resolution.
You can find it here: https://asiointi.maanmittauslaitos.fi/karttapaikka/tiedostopalvelu/korkeusmalli
(There's a language toggle in the top right corner if you need English)
Many countries have similar services, so check your local equivalent if you need specific areas.
I'm still using Terrain.Party and it works fine for me 🤷♂️ Maybe try a different browser?
