Trying to get into 3D texturing but can't afford Substance Painter (student with no income). Looking for free alternatives that actually work.

Already use Blender but want something more specialised for texturing. Don't need super pro features, just want to make decent looking models for my portfolio. Any suggestions?

Have you tried InstaMAT? They have a free Pioneer licence that's actually quite powerful. It's like a combination of Substance Painter and Designer. Still new, but definitely worth a try. Much better than struggling with Blender's basic texture painting.

I used to recommend Quixel Mixer, but since it has become paid, here are your current options:

1. ArmorPaint (free if you compile it yourself, $20 if you buy it)
2. Material Maker (completely free, open source)
3. Mari non-commercial (free but with restrictions)

Just don't expect any of them to be as polished as Substance.

Here's what I use for zero-budget projects:

- Basic texturing: Blender (better than people think if you learn nodes).
- Material creation: Material Maker.
- Hand painted details: Krita.

It's not ideal, but it gets the job done. Once you start making money, think about Substance.

Honestly, at some point you're going to have to bite the bullet and get some real software. These free alternatives are fine for learning, but they all have major limitations. If you're serious, save up for the Steam version of Substance - it's a one-time purchase and sometimes goes on sale.

Thanks to all of you! I'm going to try InstaMAT first since it's the latest and free. If that doesn't work, I'll try Material Maker. Really appreciate all the suggestions!
